RONCO to implement several new country programs under the Integrated
Mine Action Support (IMAS)
WASHINGTON, November 2001 - RONCO Consulting Corporation is pleased
to announce that it will initiate integrated mine action programs in Armenia,
Azerbaijan, and Zambia as part of its Integrated Mine Action Support (IMAS)
contract with the US State Department. RONCO's support includes the establishment
of operational Mine Action Centers, the provision of technical demining
expertise, and the use of mine detection dogs and clearance machinery. RONCO
will also train local personnel how to conduct all aspects of humanitarian
demining. RONCO is excited to implement these new programs:
In Armenia, RONCO will train and equip two 80-man demining companies,
including a Mine Detecting Dog Section and six to ten medical technicians.
In addition, RONCO will train National Mine Action Center staff to effectively
manage and implement a comprehensive demining program.
In Azerbaijan, RONCO Technical Advisors will train and equip Azerbaijan
National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) personnel to create a Mine Detecting
Dog Section. While RONCO fully trains six new dogs and their Azeri handlers,
RONCO will provide leased mine detecting dogs and handlers to assist in
ANAMA's ongoing demining operations. RONCO will also oversee the construction
and renovations of facilities, such as kennels, required to accommodate
the newly formed Mine Detecting Dog Section.
In Zambia, RONCO is assisting the Government of Zambia establish the
Zambia Mine Action Center (ZMAC). RONCO Technical Advisors will train
military personnel to: develop, manage, and implement mine awareness programs;
use the latest information management software to archive minefield data;
and manage a national-level demining program; and conduct deming operations.
It is hoped that upon completion of the RONCO assistance, the ZMAC and
Government of Zambia will be capable of implementing and sustaining a
comprehensive mine action operation.
